Course

Start outside the harbour, out around Dalkey Island and back. That's the summary.

Originally we used a few of the DBSC marks as gates to keep the course straight, but that wasn't what people wanted to do or had done since boats first sailed around the island, so the route now is simpler. Start between the East Pier light and the Bailey (within 2km of the East Pier light), around Dalkey Island and back. That's about it.

You get to choose which way you go around the island, when you sail, etc. Tactics are a key part of the event.

Tactically, you need to pick a time with a good breeze, optimize the tides, and pick the right way to go around the island. If you get it right you should be able to speed reach most of the way. That's key. Keep your speed up.

It's important for safety to check the tides to ensure that the conditions at Dalkey Island are safe for you and that you get advantage from the tide rather than hindered. You also need to make sure you avoid commercial traffic. Do NOT obstruct commercial traffic!!  This is a fun website so remember that you're responsible for your own safety when out sailing. There are no rescue facilities except those you provide yourself.

The Moths have laid down some good marker times already!  Is there a big IRC 50-footer around that can do it faster than a Moth?

Here's a map of the old course, no longer active.
